Michael Bane sitting

Professor of Green Engineering, Manchester Metropolitan University

Michael has a passionate interest in environmental matters. He currently leads on ā€œGreen Software Engineeringā€ (GSE) to final year undergraduate students at Manchester Met. GSE aims to reduce the environmental impacts of computing.

Green Software Engineering covers a wide range of activities and of people, including how to reduce the carbon emissions of computing in support of net zero ambitions. Since there is no single, best answer to this, there is a need to involve the community and bring together the state of the art in order to empower community knowledge with realistic methods. Michaelā€™s CoSeC Fellowship is focussed on supporting the CCP and CoSeC community via a GSE Community Portal, Green Compute UK.

Michael commented, ā€œIt is important, particularly given the climate emergency, to make considerable carbon savings as quickly as possible.Ā Ā As a CoSeC Fellow, I will act to bring together CoSeC with best practises in Green Software Engineering. This will primarily be via the community portal & updates to the CoSec and Computing Insight conferences. I would like to help accelerate uptake of Green Software Engineering principles across the CCPs and the wider software engineering communities, in support of UKRI DRI Net Zero commitments.ā€
